On Saturday, March 9th in Lake Waccamaw I was privileged to lay our state wreath at the marker dedication for Captain Absalom Powell who fought at the Battle of Moores Creek Bridge. The original marker placed lakeside in 1933 by two DAR chapters had over the years disappeared. Please remember this when choosing locations for our markers. Since the original marker could not be located, the Lake Waccamaw Depot Museum and Powell’s descendants funded a replacement and erected it on the museum property.

Lower Cape Fear Chapter S.A.R. members in colonial uniforms formed the color guard. Major General Robert Howe Chapter Regent Amanda Worley, in colonial dress, laid their chapter wreath. Two members of the Peter Horry Chapter in South Carolina also laid their chapter wreath. The dedication ceremony was well attended and received several color photos and a detailed write-up in the Columbus County News Reporter paper which can be read online. We thank the Museum and the Powell family for tying the past to the present with this gift to the future.

From there I traveled on to Raleigh to attend Asbury Station’s Tamassee fundraiser! What a delightful evening spent with DAR Sisters. An informative film about Tamassee gave non-DAR attendees insight into this special school. Presentations by Tamassee representatives Lori Bailey and Beth Dabney were enlightening, personal, and inspirational. Professor Elliot Engel who spoke on Andy Griffith was humorous and entertaining. Silent auction lover Anna Choi won bids on a huge container of banana bread, as well as several large baskets! Last year’s donation generated from this event purchased needed new furniture for the girls’ California cottage. Congratulations to Asbury Station members and Regent Lisa Wooten for hosting another successful fundraiser for a deserving DAR school. We thank them for tying Tamassee’s past to the present to enable their gift to the school’s future.
