Good Morning NC Daughters,
It’s April, my favorite month of the year! What mixed emotions we are all having. Flowers and trees blooming like normal, but nothing is normal in our lives. I pray none of you are ill with this virus and your families are also safe and well. This stay-at-home order is only an inconvenience and we will see it through. Yes, we have had to cancel our DAR meetings and events, hair and nail appointments, and trips planned to wonderful locations. However, there is no food shortage, no rationing of milk, sugar, hose, gas, shoes, bicycles, meat, butter, or other needed items, as there was during World Wars I and II. For now, our state is in a fairly good position, and if we keep living by the guidelines given us, we can contain this pandemic here in NC. Our thoughts and prayers go out to friends and family in New York, New Jersey, Washington, California, and Louisiana. Let us take this unexpected time to put our houses in order, read a book, work a puzzle, make face masks for hospitals, call neglected friends and family, and think of ways to continue our DAR work anyway. You may just wish to sit on your porch or deck and enjoy the promise of spring and the summer to come.
Speaking of promises, we have many awards we won’t be able to present to students in person in April, May, or June as schools have been closed probably until sometime in June. Students will miss many of the perks of being in school these last months. As May approaches, if it appears we can’t present these certificates, medals, and monetary awards in person, please check with school officials and arrange to mail the items to the school or drop them off at the school, so parents or students can pick them up in June or whenever this stay-at-home order is lifted. Please include a letter from your committee chairman and/or chapter regent to the student and one to the principal letting them know we are still presenting these awards in an effort to encourage the students, to let them know their efforts are worthy and not forgotten, and to acknowledge them for their achievements. We do not want to let them down. We do want to keep our promise to these outstanding students. Remember the words of Robert Frost: The woods are lovely, dark and deep, But I have promises to keep, And miles to go before I sleep.
