Well, Daughters, just when we thought everything was going so well, along comes this virus! So, I need to submit the entries I had waiting and catch you up on everything.
On February 19, I traveled to Chapel Hill for the Davie Poplar Chapter meeting, Barbara Post Regent. What an honor it was to present the Historic Preservation Medal to Dr. William Burlingame, a dedicated and enthusiastic historic preservationist, who led the extensive cleanup, scientific investigation, genealogical research and restoration of the McCauley Cemetery.
Then on the afternoon of the 21st your Executive Board and Service to Veterans Chair Larry Hines toured the Veterans
Life Center in Butner with John Turner. It is completely closed in, parking lot and sidewalks poured, and awaiting the next inspections before moving on to the finishing touches like putting in the ceiling! The residences are spartan but adequate. They are already making plans for adding additional female rooms. Most of the rooms are painted. John was hoping to officially open in May. Now, due to the virus, that remains to be seen. John was scheduled to speak Friday night at our April conference. We hope to have him speak in August at our postponed conference.
We left Butner, checked into a Raleigh hotel, and met at the NCSU Club for dinner and to begin our meeting. On Saturday, February 22nd, we continued and completed our meeting at Anna Choi’s office! Thank you, Anna. We ate a Panera lunch before leaving for downtown Raleigh, to lay a wreath and conduct the commemorative service for George Washington’s birthday at the base of this gorgeous statue on the capitol lawn.
The snow that had threatened this ceremony on Thursday and Friday had all but disappeared under the brilliant clear blue sky and warm temperatures of Saturday afternoon, so we were able to shed our heavy coats and truly celebrate. Many thanks to Mary Tatum, Libby McAteer, Mary Aker, Lizzy Their, and Don Ellington Sound Service for their part in this commemorative event. Thank you to all who took part and all who attended.
Many of us drove to Pisgah Forest on the 24th to attend the memorial service for Rosie Craig’s husband, Ken. Thank you, Daughters, for your support of our State Treasurer. Your presence is comforting to those left behind.
